Affenpinscher - Weighing in at 7-8 pounds the Affenpinscher is a great pet for families with small backyards, they are curious and even excellent mousers! While they are not fierce protectors they are loyal. Nicknamed "Monkey Dog" this breed does require moderate grooming to eliminate the chance of matting and skin irritation.

Bichon Frise - These 7-12 pound beauties are accepting of small children and are a great family dog, though requiring extensive grooming to keep his white coat clean and mat free. Bichon's learn quickly and are suited for a higher energy environment.

Boston Terrier - At 10-25 pounds these guys are very hardy and energetic. Excellent with children and ready to romp at a moments notice, Bostons can be independent and sometimes can be dominant or aggressive with other dogs. There is very little grooming required with this short coat breed.

Chihuahua - These little guys weigh in at only 2-6 pounds and are either smooth coated or long-haired. Their personalities are as individual as people and can be lifelong companions. Small children can enjoy this breed as well, as long as care is taken with handling. Low to moderate grooming is required based on coat. As Chihuahuas age there is a real chance they will become sensitive to children and other dogs and may nip in aggression or fear.

Lhasa Apso - Typically 12-18 pounds and have the personality of a much larger dog, these are a happy yet forceful breed. They require a lot of exercise and grooming. They are well suited to children and apartment living, making the added care a worthwhile cause.

Maltese - At 4-6 pounds this breed is an ideal apartment dog, wanting nothing more than to be with their people, children included. Their grooming regimen can be extensive, however, with regular maintenance or a "puppy cut" they are quite manageable.

Pekingese - Growing up to 14 pounds this breed is a low energy pet well suited to any age family member. They do have a high maintenance coat that can be cut short for convenience and hygiene. They are excellent barkers, alerting their owner to anything they perceive as danger.

Shih Tzu - Weighing 10-16 pounds fully grown this breed is sturdy and intelligent. They can, however, be jealous of babies and small children so care needs to be taken when adding this dog to a new family. They also require regular grooming for their long coat.

Yorkshire Terrier - Maxing out at 5-7 pounds, every ounce of this dog is high-energy. They are extremely intelligent and loving. They get along well with children and other family pets. These are a low allergy breed, whereas they do not shed or molt. There is a grooming requirement but that can be resolved with the "puppy cut".
